Tasmania

Tasmania, a short plane ride or overnight cruise from the mainland, is surprisingly different from the rest of Australia. An island roughly the same size as the Republic of Ireland or almost twice the size of Switzerland, it boasts a rich colonial past which dates back to 1803 when it was first settled as a penal colony. The legacy of this fascinating heritage is evident in the beautifully restored Georgian and Victorian buildings which line the streets and grace the countryside, many of which have now been converted into charming B&B’s or restaurants… and whilst your eyes feast on the scenery, your taste buds will enjoy a feast of their own.

The pure clean air and fresh water have given Tasmania a reputation as being Australia’s fresh food state and even the most diet-conscious of waistlines will be tempted by the full-flavoured cheeses, superb seafood and award-winning wines!

Tasmania is one of the world’s most picturesque islands.Much of its wild, spectacular scenery and stunning unspoilt wilderness is protected as National Park and an incredible one fifth of the island has been classified as a World Heritage area and another 15% is protected as National Parks or forest and marine reserves. It is also home to some extraordinary plant and animal life, including the rare 2000 year old Huon pine trees and the infamous Tasmanian Devil. With its vast areas of temperate rainforest, wild rivers, mountains and pristine beaches, Tasmania offers limitless opportunities for those who enjoy outdoor adventure and activity. The Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park offers some of the world’s best wilderness walking.

Hobart, Tasmania’s vibrant harbourside capital in the south of the island, is a good place to start or end your visit. Nestled at the base of Mount Wellington, Hobart revels in its delightful waterfront location on the River Derwent whilst in the north, Launceston, the state’s second city enjoys a picturesque setting amidst the rolling vineyards of the Tamar Valley. A visit to historic Port Arthur, site of the notorious convict penal settlement (just 90 minutes south of Hobart on the Tasman Peninsula) is also a fascinating must for any visitor.

It’s an easy place to get around by car or coach and unlike mainland Australia (where travel distances can be`large), Tasmania is compact and whichever direction you choose to drive in, the wilderness is never far away. But perhaps most importantly of all, the Tasmanians themselves are a cheerful laid-back friendly community who are only too happy to share some of their good fortune with you!
